“Baseball is My New Favorite Sport!”
After many long-winded talks with Brian of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Twin Cities about baseball, cycling and the clinic, we were excited to finally to be able to work with BBBS for our event in Minneapolis!
We had Field 12 at Bryn Mawr Park all to ourselves. Unloading the equipment, we realized that we’d have a smaller turnout than normal. There’s the bad/good of this.
The “bad” is that we, as Biking for Baseball, don’t get to play baseball with as many kids/volunteers. But that’s actually quite alright with us. The kids that DO come to our clinic really get one-on-one coaching from all the drills and game situations then come away a great ball player!
The “good” means that the BBBS is doing a great job organizing multiple other events for their matches so that kids and volunteers can have many great mentoring moments among the two of them!
After setting up the clinic stations in the infield and outfield of our field, we were ready for our 16th event!
Garrett showed up and instantly started warming up as if it were his job, then took to the field to shag some grounders. He was a little leaguer, we could tell instantly. He played middle-infield on his little league team and was a great sport.
Alex arrived and instantly declared, “I’m scared of the ball. I don’t like baseball. Volleyball is my sport.” Well, as Adam gave her a high-five and an encouraging, “Let’s give it a try, and maybe you’ll like it!” Alex grabbed a glove for the first time and headed out to the infield for warm-ups.
We had Fox9 News show up and provide the ESPN footage while capturing highlight-reel catches and first career hits. Thanks Fox9 for covering the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Twin Cities! Join up to become a volunteer today to participate in more fun activities and events with a kid seeking a positive influence in their life.
After a couple hours on the field hitting home runs, making running catches and collecting hit after hit with other kids and the B4B team, Alex exclaimed, “Baseball is my new favorite sport! It even passed volleyball!” As the camera rolled with Fox9, catching Alex stating something that we couldn’t have planted better, we captured a natural transition into the game of baseball at a B4B event! Hi-5!
