All in a Day’s Work – San Diego BBBS

 In Uncategorized

San Diego has a lot of beach going on. It was only appropriate that Robb Field, the location for our game, was next to a beach!

First, we started off with a successful morning on the day of our event. Working with the local San Diego channel, KUSI, we were featured on their morning show. Samantha Lang of BBBS – SD helped promote the local agency like a rockstar!

She was great and her cool, calm, collected demeanor helped ease our minds before we went in front of the camera. Thanks KUSI and Samantha!

We arrived at Robb Field an hour before the matches were to show up to go through our usual set-up routine, which includes: 3 clinic stations, banners hung, gloves laid out, bats and balls distributed to each dugout, infield groomed, bases placed 90 feet apart on the diamond and PA system hook-up. We bring the fun!

Matches arrived uncharacteristically early,  which we can only assume meant that they were ecstatic for the event with Biking for Baseball! Thing is, that’s probably true. The program in San Diego is actually the first Sports Bigs program that B4B has worked with outside of Colorado. So they were definitely excited for some baseball!

We started on time at 6 PM with warm-ups, intros, an outline of the evening, and division of matches into stations and teams. We had 17 matches for the day which was one of our best turnouts. That’s 34 volunteers and kids out there on the diamond playing baseball! That’s rad.

After an hour of learning the fundamentals it was time to put our skills to the test. The kids loved it and we even had a high-school Varsity player, Frankie, with us who’s pitching coach is David Wells! That’s crazy. I didn’t even have a pitching coach growing up and this kid has David Wells. Frankie deserves it though. He was great!

We had a TON of talent out there on the field. I think it was partially the California influence. Baseball is on kid’s minds in California like white is on rice.  It made for a well-played game with MANY mentoring moments because of the combined interests of Big and Little. So great to see that out there! We’re doing what we are saying we are doing. It’s working! High-five!

Thanks to Jessica and Micaela who came out to help with the evening from BBBS-SD. Another fun and successful event! Let’s keep it up team!
