We’ve been having a great time on the road from Seattle to Oregon. After these grueling days of biking, we’re able to muster up just enough energy to follow everything that is going on in MLB. Matt Kemp is on fire and the Orioles lead the AL East, but the most interesting thing happened in the Oakland A’s game last night. Bartolo Colon pitched 38 pitches straight without throwing a ball. That’s right. 38 straight strikes. Teammate Johnny Gomes was quoted as saying you can’t get that many straight strikes from a pitching machine; and that’s right on. But the first thought that came to mind when I heard the news was how many hits did he give up if he kept locating the ball in the strike zone. He gave up 2 hits in those 38 pitches. Without watching the game, I would imagine his defense helped him out quite a bit. It’s a wonder the opposing Angels didn’t tee off his stuff that was consistently in the zone. I always thought it was a good thing to offer some pitches out of the strike zone for hitters bite at or to change up their eye level. And I really don’t think Bartolo Colon changes that mindset with what he did last night. Him pitching 38 straight strikes was pretty much something crazy that rarely happens. The previous “record” was set by Tim Wakefield with 30 straight strikes in 1998. I think that is even more amazing considering Wakefield had to locate his knuckleball. Crazy! We’ll keep blogging about the baseball season and our cross country trip, so keep following for updates from the road.
