B4B Tune Up – October 1, 2011

 In Uncategorized

Hope you have had a great weekend and got to catch some of the playoff baseball action! I love October playoff baseball!

It’s been a busy couple weeks for Biking for Baseball. Here’s a recap:

September 24, 2011

1. Last weekend, Biking for Baseball (B4B) partnered with the Rocky Mountain Young Professionals (RMYP) joint committee branch of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association (RMWEA) organization to put together a softball tournament to support the Water for People organization. Wow, that was a mouthful. But it sure came together well!

All funds for the day were distributed to Water for People. Water For People helps people in developing countries improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs. B4B loves helping people!

B4B served as the sole volunteering organization for the day. We grilled, umpired and mingled our way through an 80+ degree day at Tony Grampsas Park in Golden, CO. Adam Kremers served as the Dj and MC, coordinating game times and volunteers. Rex Roberts, Adam Clark, Drew Kennedy, Drew Elkins and Austin Tillack umpired the entire tournament. Erika Marquez, Shannon Tillack and Lindsey Strickler grilled hot dogs and burgers for 100+ people that came out to support a good cause.

Overall, there were 8 teams that competed in the day’s tournament. Players included engineering firms in the Denver area that came out to support a good cause. This list of companies that teamed up included:

  • Arcadis
  • Malcolm Pirnie
  • Carollo
  • CDM
  • CH2M-Hill
  • Denver Water
  • Hatch Mott MacDonald
  • Leonard Rice Engineers
  • TST, Inc
  • Wright Water Engineers

The championship included last year’s champion, Denver Water, versus the combo team of Malcolm Pirnie and Arcadis. The Malcolm Pirnie/Arcadis team blocked Denver Water from being a repeat champion, by claiming their first Water for People Championship! Congratulations!

Thanks to all the volunteers that came out to help Biking for Baseball make this the most successful Water for People softball tournament to date! Can’t wait for next year!

2. Once good news starts gaining momentum, it’s hard to stop it. Shortly after our high started to settle from the fun-tastic weekend we just had at the softball tournament, we received our official partnership declaration from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado! B4B ON!

We looked to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) because that’s where it all started with us. Several members of B4B our Big Brothers in the Sports Buddies program here in Denver. Participating in a positive youth mentorship program centered around sports, helped us create the vision of Biking for Baseball. Aligning similarities with these two organizations is nearly redundant, but there’s just too much potential power to be a positive influence in the Denver community to pass up. We’ll take our organization to the road next year and extend our events and knowledge we have gained from working with BBBS here in Denver and energize youth mentorship and sports programs across the country.

We can’t wait for what the future holds for us. And now with the partnership with one of our favorite organizations in Big Brothers Big Sisters, we couldn’t be more excited!

3. Thursday nights is one of our favorite nights at B4B. Each week we head down the street for 50 cent wings at our favorite local bar, Wash Park Sports Alley. Greg, the owner, is one of the most genuine people you will meet and the wings he makes, are some of the best you’ll ever have. Naturally, we looked to find another partnership with another well run business that we enjoy working with.

We’re excited to reach an unofficial partnership with Sports Alley. We hope to have several events at the local bar over the remaining months until our journey, that ultimately raise funds for the Biking for Baseball organization.

We are tentatively scheduled to be associated with one of the best new artists in the Denver area, Katy McAllister. She has an UNBELIEVABLE voice. Check the link, listen to her music, and you’ll be hooked. On Friday, October 29th, there will be a $5 cover to see her perform live at Sports Alley. All cover proceeds made from the evening will then be subsequently donated to Biking for Baseball! What an opportunity!

4. Another race!? You can’t be serious!?

Yup.

Sunday, October 2nd here in Denver, is one of the biggest 5k walk/runs this side of the Mississippi. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k Walk/Run. The Biking for Baseball team will be running our hardest at the crack of dawn (7 AM race start!), and then be doing what we do best, and spreading the word about B4B’s mission to the thousands of attendees afterwards. So look for that bright green B4B shirt again throughout the crowd and come say hi!

We’ll be doing a weekly update on events from here on out. So be sure to follow our “B4B Tune Up” in the future!
