Game #6 – Petco Park – San Diego Padres v. Colorado Rockies

 In Uncategorized

After catching a game at Dodger Stadium, we headed back to Hollywood to get a few hours of rest before heading south to San Diego. With games on back to back days in different cities, we had a lot of mileage to cover in a short amount of time to get to the game before first pitch. We left LA area bright and early and headed down the Pacific Coast Highway for what was to be our last day on the coast.

Really upscale beach towns of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach provided us with great coastal riding towards San Diego. About halfway through the route, we ran into Marine Corps Base Camp Pendelton. Just before Camp Pendelton, we had the best bike trails so far. The San Onofre State Beach had a great road that eventually led into what looked like a former air strip or military road that was only for bikes. Awesome riding that went straight into the ID check point heading into Camp Pendelton. Riding through the military base was really interesting to get passed by HUGE military vehicles.

After Camp Pendelton, we were riding through the beach towns of northern San Diego. Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach were pleasant little towns we passed before we reached our ending point for the day in Del Mar, where our hosts live. We made such great time down the coast, we found ourselves with a few unexpected hours of free time before the game and before we could even get in where we were staying. So first things first, we found a park in Del Mar with a great patch of grass and passed out with the warm sun and the cool Pacific breeze making it ideal conditions for napping.

Probably an hour passed by with 4 bikers asleep next to their bikes in this nice park in an upscale neighborhood. I’m sure we were funny to look at. We eventually decided to spend some time at the beach, our last ocean time until we get to Miami. Of course, we took the obligatory photos with the back tires of our bikes in the water.

We’ll get pictures of our front tires in the Atlantic when we get there too. After messing around with that for a bit, we reveled in one of our favorite beach activities, beach frisbee!

We started out throwing harmless flyers to each other on the beach, but that soon turned into full out runners diving into the water in our B4B team jerseys. SportsCenter highlights for sure. Very fun times!

After our last beach fun for a while, we headed to meet Jordan at his place to clean up and head to Petco Park for the Padres game. The Padres were playing our hometown Rockies so we were pretty pumped for the game. It was difficult to balance cheering for the Rockies and the hometown Padres, but the Rockies didn’t give us much of a chance to cheer. The Padres won 3-1 with a solid outing by old man Jeff Suppan of the Padres. The quick game was highlighted by a foul ball landing in someone’s beer in the stands. Watch him chug the beer with the ball in it.

Petco Park is a very beautiful stadium in a very beautiful city. Everything about San Diego and Petco Park was pleasant and inviting. The stadium was elegantly designed throughout. Architecturally, it has been one of the most impressive we’ve seen. I loved how they used existing structures as part of the design, incorporating the Western Metal Supply warehouse in left field into the stadium. Very neat! The grass in center field is also a good place for families to watch the game, like you would at a spring training or minor league game. Great stadium!

It was great to watch the game with some friends from back home. We had a blast catching up with Jordan, Amy, Ashley, and Meghan at the ballpark. Good friends, good stadium, good times in San Diego!
