Santana and the NYM Get What They Deserve
Johan Santana of the Mets threw a no-hitter tonight. He’s been a good pitcher for a long time so this is quite the accomplishment for him. He’s led his respective league in Wins (2006), ERA (2004 & 2006, 2008), SO (2004,2005,2006) and Winning Percentage (2003) before. He won the Cy Young in 2004 and 2006. He’s been a 4-time All-Star, won a Gold Glove and was selected as a member of the Sports Illustrated All-Decade Team. He’s got the credentials. He was signed by the Mets to a loaded contract. But he battled injuries. He missed the entire 2011 season with a torn anterior capsule. Something like 6 pitchers have had the same surgery, none with a result like this.
But ya know what’s really cool? It was the first no-hitter EVER for the Mets franchise in their 51-year history. Congratulations to that organization and their fans. They’ve had a lot of good pitchers that have had great careers as a Met, but then thrown no-hitters for other teams (Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Doc Gooden). Watching and feeling the excitement of the team and the ballpark sure gives us goosebumps.
Both Santana and the NYM deserved this a long time ago. We’re happy it happened for both of them tonight.
Check out all 27 outs recorded by Johan and the Mets on June 1, 2012 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals (the reigning World Series Champions nonetheless).
